Six Random Screencaps: Henry and Coreen
If I had to pick a favorite relationship on Blood Ties, this would be it. Not as a romantic ‘ship (much to the disappointment of some of the people who’ve read my fic), but because while Coreen is pretty much everyone’s kid sister, there’s a special resonance to it with Henry.
He’s well aware of her anything-but-subtle crush on him early in the series, and it’s pretty clear that it’s largely part and parcel of her naive enthusiasm for all things supernatural (plus a generous dollop of hero-worship — that rescue was a helluva first impression!), so he makes a rather obvious point of keeping her at a literal arm’s length. A lot of fandom seems to put this down to simply not liking her, but that’s missing the point.
Coreen is smart, vibrant, insatiably curious and a dyed-in-the-wool dreamer. I came to the conclusion a long time ago that Henry sees a lot of himself in that, and doesn’t want to see her hurt or see her lose the sense of wonder that he’s managed to hold onto for almost 500 years. She’s still a kid in his eyes, in a way that he never really got to be, and every time she asks him about his experiences as a vampire or lights up about some new-to-her area of occult knowledge without pausing to consider the hazards, he sees the very real prospect of her destruction, and it scares the crap out of him.
Which doesn’t stop the pair of them from ganging up and teasing Vicki. :-)
